Members of Parliament Forced to Resign because of Insulting Islam

Finnish lawmakers forced the right-wing party representative on Wednesday, June 13 to resign from the parliamentary committee after making insulting comments on Muslims and immigrants.

"Although I consider the attack on me as unreasonable. I do not want to extend the circus produced by other people," said a member of parliament True Finns Jussi Halla-Aho on his party's website, according to a Reuters report, as reported by the website.

Halla-Aho was forced to resign from his post as chairman of the parliamentary committee dealing with immigration and state security after making derogatory remarks to Muslims and immigrants.

The MP was fined by the Supreme Court on Friday for posting comments on his blog in 2008 linking Islam to pedophilia. He was also fined for connecting Somalis, who are a large group of immigrants in Finland, with theft.

The court stated that Halla-Aho's post qualified as an incitement of hatred towards ethnic groups. The court ruling said that the statement of hatred was not a word that was under the protection provided by freedom of speech.

The True Finns party rose to become the leading opposition party in last year's election after criticizing the bailout policy in the European crisis. But the party has drawn controversy after statements of hostility towards Islam from some of its members.

Another MP, James Hirvisaari was fined for inciting racial and ethnic hatred after saying Muslims brought violence to Finland.

Another member, Teuvo Hakkarainen, was sentenced last year for using insulting words to black people and mocking by parodying the prayer movement in an online video.

There are around 40,000 to 45,000 Muslims from 5.2 million Finnish residents. Islam was introduced to Finland by the Baltic Tatars in the late 19th century.
