Halim Dhanidina; First Muslim Lawyer in America

HALIM DHANIDINA is a big leap for the Muslim minority in the United States. He is a Muslim lawyer in the California High Court, and became the first Muslim American in the California Court.

"I hope that work becomes an example to others in the Muslim American community, especially youth, that our faith and identity need not be an obstacle to our full participation in California civil institutions," Halim Dhanidina said.

"Similarly, I hope to carry out my new responsibilities by serving the community in pursuing justice with dignity and honor," he said.

Dhanidina was appointed to the California High Court prosecutors team on May 18 by Governor Jerry Brown. Born in Chicago, Dhanidina came from a Gujarat family who emigrated from Tanzania to the US in 1960. Dhanidina spent 14 years as a Los Angeles County lawyer. 14 years as a district lawyer and being in court almost every day has made him familiar with the courtroom, including court regulations.

The 39-year-old lawyer said he had been in the prosecutor's office for years with a sense of "elegance under pressure."

Dhanidina holds a law degree at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she serves as chairman of the Asia Pacific Law Students Association. He obtained a bachelor's degree at Pomona College, where he founded the first Muslim Student Association. He currently sits on the Board of Governors of the Asia Pacific American Bar Association Los Angeles.
