Grad rockets landed in southern Israel

JERUSALEM - Chunks of Grad rockets were found on Saturday morning (06/16/2012) in Ovda, located north of the Israeli port city of Eilat, Israeli media reported.

Security forces began inspecting the area after the explosion was heard on Friday night, the report said, adding that the explosion did not cause casualties or other physical damage. Initial investigations showed that the rocket had a 122 millimeter diameter.
The incident was unusual, because this was the first time a rocket had landed in this area, according to reports. The source of the rocket is not known so far, but an investigation is underway to check whether it was launched from the direction of Jordan or from the Sinai Peninsula.

In April, three similar rockets were fired towards the city of Eilat. There were no previous warnings in this attack, and only known from the rocket fragments that they were indeed fired from the Sinai Peninsula.
