Megabus from New York City to Washington DC

Post by TravelforFun » Sat Oct 28, 2017 1:08 pm

Has anyone taken the express trip from NYC to DC on Megabus? What are the pros and cons? I'm considering doing this because the bus stops are at Bryant Park in NYC and Union Station in DC which are very close to my hotels. Tia.

They are cheap, fast, and quiet when they're empty. Not as a nice as a train but usually much cheaper.

There's also Bolt Bus and Best Bus. The biggest complaint I've heard is that sometimes they can be frigid and the driver can't control the temperature.

Whoa, I've missed out on something here. When did taking the bus become trendy? Should I start doing that to meet the future young, attractive and wealthy Mrs. Lutz?

Used to take it all the time when I lived in the area. Biggest problem is that there is no terminal on the NYC side so you may have to be out in bad weather on the NY to DC leg. Otherwise, they are inexpensive and reasonably comfortable.

Over on the West Coast the MegaBus between SF and LA is trendy, trendy, trendy. They pick-up and drop-off in trendy areas. Many of them come with wi-fi so that's a clue. I like going out and getting social but I would stay away from any place with that I might meet a Mrs, that would just add too many complications.

This thread is now in the Personal Consumer Issues forum (bus x 1e6).

I like Megabus. It’s been awhile for me and I didn’t go to D.C.

The New York pickup and drop-off point was some diner on a corner. Seats were comfortable. Different drivers & passengers can make or break the experience for me — that’s not a comment on driving ability. It was always pretty smooth.
Wi-fi.

Not sure if this can be used between NY and DC - but I see their buses from time to time in this area (Arlington/Alexandria Virginia)

Pay the extra few bucks and reserve a seat. I took one from LA to SF, and it was a miserable experience with a low-end crowd. It was also when vaping was in its infancy and not yet banned, and the smoke was horrendous.

Great that this, in many/most cases, is now banned/restricted.

I have absolutely no way of evaluating the risks, but one issue I would be concerned about is safety. Low cost and competetion (where cost is a major factor) could drive down driver compensation and driver competence/quality. In my opinion, risk of driver error is the biggest safety risk for bus travel.

I ride megabus a fair amount. It's a bus, with all the annoyances that entails (don't plan to use the bathroom on the bus), but is generally a less chaotic experience than chinatown buses (which I also ride).

The farther in advance you buy a megabus ticket, the cheaper the seat is likely to be.

I also usually pay the few dollars for a reserved seat upstairs. I like the front row or the "balconies".

Edit: I do, however, think the upstairs front row seats are the least safe ones.

The Vamoos bus is great....feels very clean, safe, and reliable. Do not take the slightly cheaper chinatown busses...unless you enjoy the adrenaline rush of things like your bus breaking down on a major highway, your driver getting lost and the passengers having to help navigate, homeless men getting on the bus after it reached its destination at midnight and physically fighting over who would get to help you with your luggage...all of which happened on my several trips using the chinatown busses :|

I knew several folks, a few years ago, who regularly took one of these. Never took one myself - althought certainly not a dull trip - but I think I prefer safe and "dull"

Most of the Megabus rides that i have taken out of Chicago have been uneventful. They start off loud until the bus starts. Then once the bus starts, most of the students place their pacifiers (ear buds) in and you don't hear a thing. Most of the time I have traveled, it has been at the $1 rate.

I took Megabus and Bolt each once, but they are too far from the exit to the Lincoln Tunnel, so time was an issue. I usually take Amtrak ($89 if you reserve in advance). When I need to go to DC more last minute and Amtrak is too expensive, I take Peter Pan/Greyhound because they have a terminal in Port Authority that exits directly to the tunnel. I find this saves 20 to 30 minutes. If time is not an issue, both Megabus and Bolt are fine, cheap, clean modes of transportation.

Check that Vamoose stops in DC where you want (you mentioned Union Station in DC in the opening post). The only time I took a bus between NYC and DC was a few years ago. At least then, Vamoose did not have a stop in DC. It did have stops outside of DC that were near Metrorail stations. That was fine for me.

Our D had caught Megabus and BoltBus between LA and SF. She generally books very close to travel date. So it is $20-30 each way. She hasn’t had many complaints about it so far. They use Greyhound terminals.
