I originally got Speck Presidio clear cases. But after reading around some more, I also placed an order for Caudabe Lucid Clear cases (crystal for me, rose gold for the wife). I'll keep whichever we like better. If you're interested, Caudabe is offering 25% off with the code MacMike2017, or 20% off with the code IPHONETEN.

FYI, screen repairs for the iPhone X are going to cost $279, and any other repairs (e.g., damage to the glass back) will cost $549:

https://macrumors.com/2017/10/29/is ... -iphone-x/

I've never purchased AppleCare+ for my phone (I always purchase it for my wife, who drops her phone daily), but those prices made me reconsider. I decided to go with SquareTrade instead. $119 per phone (compared to $199 for AppleCare+) for a 2-year plan for two phones, which you can transfer to any subsequent phone within the warranty period, Apple or not. $99 deductible and they will reimburse for repairs at Apple. Of course, with AppleCare+, screen replacement is only $29. With one repair (or zero), I still come out ahead with SquareTrade. With two, AppleCare+ wins. With 3 or more, Squaretrade wins again because Apple limits the $29 repair price to two incidents.

By "sold out," I'm pretty sure the poster meant the phones that were guaranteed to arrive on launch day. In other words, if you order now, Apple is saying you shouldn't expect it to ship for 5-6 weeks. Apple reportedly has 2-3 million on hand, and those "sold out" within minutes.
Apple always plays this game. They want to encourage a feeding frenzy. It's getting a bit old.

Eh, I'm not sure it's really a game. There have been well publicized and independently researched reports about production difficulties. I doubt this is really about artificial scarcity. Some releases (especially the "S" releases) have been far less frenzied. I bought my iphone 5s on launch day after standing in line for all of 15 minutes at 9:00AM. Demand may also be higher this time around due to worldwide release (rather than the delayed international releases that they used to do). I do believe that initial launch stock truly was in fact "sold out", but they are making more every day.

This time around, I did the middle of the night wake-up thing for the pre-order. Really, wasn't so bad- I was up for 20 minutes to order and went back to sleep. It was worth it over waiting another 5-6 weeks and dealing with my current partially non-functional phone (due to my own abuse). What I don't understand is people who will wait in line for hours.

We have been Apple products fans and have been buying since 2006....MBP's, iPadPros, iPhone6Plus.
At $1000, I have serious doubts that we will go for the X Phone.
I don't mind spending that on laptops, but not a phone.
Apple may have lost me on this one.
Great products...yes
Great service when needed....yes
But they just priced themselves outta my market.

This is why Apple offers new phones at a wide variety of price points- everything from the base iphone SE ($150) to the 256gig iphone X ($1,150). They recognize that not everyone is willing to pay top-dollar for the highest end product.

first reviews/impressions are out:
https://theverge.com/2017/10/31/165 ... e-x-review

looks like a nice phone. i am an android user but can attest that the 18:9 displays these days are very much worth it...i hate big phones and i hate small screens. this new display ratio gives me a "big"-ish screen in a phone that actually fits in my hand. if i were an iphone user (and i have to use an iphone 8 at work), i would go for the X if i could afford it (but i'm also happy paying <$500 for my LG G6 to get 95% of the same experience).

I'm not sure. I considered Steve Jobs a thoroughly reprehensible person. I'm not saying I planned it that way, but I didn't buy an iPhone until after his death.

I still use a Windows PC, never having gotten comfortable with MacBooks or Macs. I find the iPad useful and convenient, and the iPhone preferable to an Android device for me. I'm using Apple Airport Extremes because I bought them before the various mesh routers became available, and at the time, they were a simple way to install multiple WAPs and have them play nicely with each other.

I'm sure that I'm not the only Apple buyer who has a less dogmatic view of the company and its products than you suggest.

Oddly, I find more fervent anti-apple fanboys than the Steve Jobs worshipers they always seem to rant about. Apple makes a good phone, but I've never been particularly enamored with any of their other products.

I love their phones and my wife has an ipad but we don't have any other Apple products in our home. We still prefer to use PCs.

I don't think I had an iPhone before Jobs died either. The first iphone I had was the 4s and I think it came out just after he passed. I have been using macbooks for as long as I can remember though. At this point, I only buy Apple products. I have tried PC products that were considered top of the line (Surfacebook, SurfacePro) and they have all been inferior, IMO, and I've returned every one of them. At this point, I have learned my lesson that non-Apple computers/tablets just don't work for me.

As far as phones go, I would probably be content with an Android device like the Note or the L6, but considering the ecosystem of Apple products that I have, it's really pointless for me to consider anything else. I'm really happy with the products Apple has, and I don't have any issue with the dollars I spend.

ETA: I'm not sure why you say Apple doesn't need a marketing plan. They seem to market more than any company I'm aware of in their industry. I'm over all of the iPhone X commercials I keep running into on the internet.

I switched to a Mac only a few years ago, even though I've had an iPhone since the 3G. I could easily use a PC (and do every day at work) and always consider the Androids, like the S8, Note 8, and Pixel 2. But I very much like the way all of my iDevices play together. It drove me mad a couple of weeks ago when, for some reason, I couldn't send/receive text messages from my MacBook Pro and have them automatically appear on my other devices (issue resolved). Stuff like that just makes my life easier. So that gives the advantage to Apple for all of my computing needs. Their devices really do just work, and they work together. They're also usually designed very well, which matters to me. That silver iPhone X is beautiful.

First impressions, anyone? I got to the Apple Store at 7 a.m. yesterday for my 8 a.m. reservation window. The walk-in line was insane, but I was escorted straight to the front of the reservation line, where I faced all of the bleary eyed people with chairs and pillows who had camped out overnight. Preordering is definitely the way to go. I checked the stock at the local Apple stores this morning, and all of the ones around me had availability for reservation and pickup today.

Anyway, first in the store, out pretty quickly. Initial impressions of the phone are very good. It's a bit heftier than the 6/7 phones and certainly feels like a premium device. The screen is phenomenal, FaceID has worked without a hitch (even with my sunglasses), wireless charging is incredibly convenient, and I don't miss the home button at all. Looking forward to shooting some 4k videos and playing around with the camera more, but it has received great reviews. I also need to download some augment reality apps to try that out...but the animojis are indeed fun, if a bit gimmicky.

Happy to answer any questions folks have about the phone.

NB: If, like me, you sit at your desk a lot and intend to use the new privacy feature that hides the content of notifications until FaceID verifies that it's you, I highly recommend . In the stand setting, I can just glance over at the phone and see my notifications when it unlocks.

I read that the X can be set up by being near one of your Apple devices and (I assume) verifying your Apple ID through 2FA on other said device. Any info on this?

Unfortunately my first impression is the opposite of yours. See my post here. The smaller screen size is a deal breaker. Mine is going back for an an 8Plus, I think. viewtopic.php?f=11&t=231452&newpost=360 ... ead#unread

If you've ever set up an Apple Watch, it's a similar process. You put the new phone by the old one, then the old one displays the swirling star/galaxy screen (there's probably an official name for that), which is evidently unique particle cloud pairing method. The new phone scans the swirly galaxy screen particle cloud and then starts the transfer process.

Thanks for the details. No Apple Watch so that process is new to me. :sharebeer

The touchpad alone is reason enough for me to use MacBooks over Windows based laptop. Although my understanding is if you dual boot the MacBook, under Windows the touchpad is about the same as any other touchpad on a windows machine.

Once I understood the form factor difference between the 8 plus and the X the decision to buy the X was straightforward to me. Bigger better screen in a small form factor that more easily fits in my pocket. That is worth a couple hundred dollars to me. So I will wait for the frenzy to die down then next Spring walk into an Apple store and buy one.

I have switched back and forth between Android and iPhone. I lost my Note 5 and bought a Note 4 on Ebay for $200. The Note 4 performance and battery are lousy. I was waiting to see what Samsung and Apple came out with. For me Samsung is likely out as I don't like all of the bloatware. I always manage to drop my iPhone - usually in my handbag which I throw on the floor when I open the door and my hand is full of packages. So .. I don't know ....

You can do that now. I canceled my wife's shipment for later this month (she wasn't as quick as me during the preorder), and reserved one at the Apple Store online this morning for pickup this afternoon. Easier than simply walking in because they already have it ready for you.

I read that the X can be set up by being near one of your Apple devices and (I assume) verifying your Apple ID through 2FA on other said device. Any info on this?
If you've ever set up an Apple Watch, it's a similar process. You put the new phone by the old one, then the old one displays the swirling star/galaxy screen (there's probably an official name for that), which is evidently unique particle cloud pairing method. The new phone scans the swirly galaxy screen particle cloud and then starts the transfer process.
Thanks for the details. No Apple Watch so that process is new to me. :sharebeer
No problem. If you aren't trading in your old phone (I traded in my 64gb iPhone 6 for $145 on the spot), then I would recommend doing it at home. I did mine at the store and had to wait around for half an hour while the new phone restored from the iCloud backup. Simple process, but it can take a while.

I just checked the Apple website and found that if I wanted an iPhone X, it is available today at a nearby Apple store. The iPhone X must not be selling out or the supply is more than expected. Check to see if there is one in your area if you want one today.
Best Wishes, | Joe
